Why 512 SSD configuration in M2 MacBook Air not worth it?

The recent configuration tweak from Apple on latest version of M2 MacBook Air has resulted in reduction of SSD speed on base model and requires user upgrade to the 512GB SSD version for the increased speed and performance. Even though Apple has clarified that most normal user will not notice change in performance, over the years the performance would be evident and may even result in slower data read speed. So, for most users, the upgrade to 512GB version would be the suitable solution and it impacts the overall product price. Following are my reasons on why the 512GB SSD version does not makes sense and opting for M1 Pro version would be the wiser decision.

• Increased configuration puts price closer to M1 Pro: The increase from 256GB SSD to 512GB SSD version comes at a higher price and the overall cost brings the M2 MacBook Air closer to the M1 Pro MacBook. If the price is too close to the M1 Pro MacBook, then opting to the premium version of the processor would be the smart decision, as with increased price you are getting both RAM upgrade from 8GB to 16GB and SSD upgrade from 256GB to 512GB.
• Pro-Motion display could be the next big feature update: M1 Pro MacBook not only comes with the configuration upgrade, but also with the Pro-motion display with 120Hz and advanced mini-LED technology. Frustrated usage of AirPods Pro with manufacturing defect

As I have detailed in my earlier articles about possibility of manufacturing defect in my AirPods Pro and I have been using with the issue for past one year. As I continued to use my AirPods Pro, there were couple of frustrations which forced me to visit Apple service center at the earliest to get it resolved. The concerns are as follows

• Echoing voice while attending calls in AirPods Pro: Recently, while I was taking calls on my iPhone through AirPods pro, I noticed strange voice echo while talking and the issue propped up during calls. Initially, I though the issue was due to bad network and tried resetting both iPhone and AirPods Pro. The issue kept propping up even with all basic troubleshooting steps and tried contacting Apple customer support for any possible resolutions. All options went in vain, and the issue kept propping up whenever I took up any call through my AirPods Pro, either through WIFI or through mobile network.
• Tickling sound while watching movies or hearing music: Another issue I noticed while using my AirPods Pro was, whenever I move my head or while walking, I used to hear tickling sound on my device and as usual I have tried all basic troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. However, all my effort to resolve the issue went in vain and continued to use my AirPods Pro.

The above issues may seem normal for few people and for me it was completely frustrating and at one point, I was even checking out feasible option of buying new alternative headphones. 2nd Time failure of my MacBook Pro and it was not the end

As stated in my earlier posts, my 2012 MacBook Pro had started to show off its wear-out and had couple of failures earlier. First failure was resolved through SMC reset and the second failure was resolved through power cable replacement. However, the issues were more than expected and following are the few that were encountered

• Complete shutdown overnight and loose contact of power cable: One fine day, when I was about to login to my MacBook Pro, the laptop was not turning ON and I was completely sure that my laptop had 100% charge and there is no possibility of draining out overnight. So, again I had to diagnose the issue and found that the power cable was not properly intact with laptops power source and had to adjusted to get proper power source. So, finally I was able to diagnose the issue with power source in my laptop and the only solution was to adjust the cable until the power light is ON.
• Trackpad issues and Battery got bulged: With random shutdowns and power source issues of my MacBook pro, there was one other issue that was concerning me while I was working on my personal project was that the trackpad was getting sticky, and the usual mouse click, or the right click was not as smooth as it used to be. While I was concerned that my trackpad was not functioning as expected, I noticed that bottom lid of my MacBook pro was coming out and when I opened out the bottom lid, I was in complete shock about my battery, it got bulged and may completely get out of shape in short span of time and to be replaced as early as possible.

Constraint’s while being independent of Laptop

With evolution of mobile and tablets in recent times, it was proven that the handheld devices can co-exist with laptop and most of the activities can be executed on the go. I use MAC as my primary device and will leverage my iPad or iPhone to take care of important work activities while on travel. However, there are few constraints while using handheld devices with independent of laptop and wanted to detail my concerns associated with handheld devices. 

• Opening Zip files in handheld devices: Even with the technology advancements and importance of using mobile devices on the go, most transactions and large file transactions happen with Zip file extensions. However, the handheld devices do not have option to open or extract the Zip files and has lot of constraints while transferring file with Zip extensions.

• Limited applications availability and premium subscription charges: Most of the desktop applications have now been optimized or developed from scratch to work on handheld devices however, there are numerous applications which have not been ported to work on handheld devices and even if the applications are available in mobile or tablet devices, the applications have premium subscription charges and mostly do not have one-time cost benefits.

Issues in iPhone dual sim capabilities

For past few years iPhone have been offering dual sim capabilities like one physical sim and E-Sim options, however usage of the dual sim in iPhone is complicated for most users. I have been using iPhone 11 for past few years and configured e-sim as my alternative mobile number. However, while using dual sim on my iPhone, I was facing few issues and was expecting Apple to address the concerns, so the users can get seamless experience.

• Lack of option available to select sim quickly from dialed list: If you were about to call already dialed contact or the contact’s name you have saved already, then iPhone will use the sim that had received the call, or the preferred line selected while saving the contact. There was no option to enable checklist while dialing the already dialed or received number to select the line for the call and lack of option available to enable to ask about the preferred line, every time the saved contact number is dialed. 
• Using alternative number or second SIM to send messages: When you send a message to a contact, the messages are always sent from the primary sim, or the preferred line selected while sending the message. There was no option available to select the SIM line while sending the message or the option to enable checklist for specific contact list.
• Sending message without saving the contact: When you quick dial the number of a person, there was no option available to directly send a message to that number, either you had to dial the number to send the message or save the number to send the messages.

New features to be included in Apple Music for Dolby Atmos & Lossless Music

I have been using my Apple music for past few months and have been getting glued to the platform precisely due to the sound quality and exclusive Dolby Atmos features. However, with introduction of new lossless and Dolby Atmos features to the Apple's music catalog, there should have been few must have features. Following are my suggestions for incorporating new features into Apple Music. 

• Icon in notification center showcasing the music quality: When I hear the songs in Apple music, often I get confused about the quality of the song, whether the song is encoded in Lossless music or have advanced Dolby Atmos quality. So, each time to check the quality of the song, I had to open my iPhone and open music application and check whether the song displays Lossless or Dolby Atmos icon above the lyrics text. To overcome this constraint, Apple could have just introduced an icon in the notification box in home screen to identify whether the song is played in Lossless quality or at Dolby Atmos quality. 
• Creation of station from home screen: I often hear random songs while working and most the times my mood changes after hearing the song. So, now when I wanted to create a station for the song, I had to open my music application and create station for similar music. I understand that the station for a particular song can be created with Siri, and it would be helpful if there is an option to create station from home screen with an icon.

Signing off – Goodbye to Google photos

I have been detailing in my earlier articles that I have been thinking to move away from Google photos due to its recent notifications about storage quota counting against the account limit for photos and users had to pay for added storage options. With no options left, I had to make hard decision to move away from Google photos for following reasons. 

• Long term practical option: the major tech giants have decided to charge users for storing their data online. With no options left, we have found affordable online cloud storage choice and Google has exorbitant pricing for its storage plan. Additionally, I also had to look out for reliable online cloud storage choice for my family as well. Google offers only extremely limited storage option for family sharing and the prices were exceeding my budget. OneDrive offers the lowest pricing per GB and has dedicated 1 TB storage options for family members. These attractive storage plan seems to be the most practical in long term for its pricing and access to office suite of apps. 
• Added benefits: Google online cloud storage prices were less compared to Apple but does not offer any added benefits with storage plan and are limited only individual GMAIL account. However, with OneDrive storage plan, users can also get access to its exclusive office apps and can additionally activate those office applications in individual devices.

• Heart rate monitoring: Smart band can include basic heart rate tracking options to identify if there are any fluctuations in heart rate. 
• Step's tracker: Basic steps tracker to count number of steps walked in each day and jogging measurements. 
• Calories burned: The smart band device can also have option to track calories burned through walking or jogging and provide simple number count on calories for each day. 
• Longer battery life: With inclusion of simply basic features, the Apple smart band can offer few days of battery life. 
• Digital clock: Basic digital display to reveal time for each day.

Predictions for upcoming Apple Mac products in 2021

Apple’s April event had ended, and the announcements were pretty much straight forward. The next product launch from Apple will happen only on September and I am sure there will be large leaks and rumours on upcoming releases. I wanted to put out some of my expectations on Apple products, rather than focusing on all products I will dedicate this post on next generation Apple MacBook models. Here are my predictions. 

• Three versions of MacBook: With recent launch of iMac 24 inches, it is evident that there will three versions of MacBook. 
• 12-inch MacBook: this will be the basic or starting version of MacBook. The price may start from $1199 and may even include M1X processor. This model will use the same screen resolution as the earlier version and the other difference from rest of the models is the reduced GPU performance. 
• 14-inch MacBook: this will be the mid-level version of the MacBook. The price may start from $1299-$1399 and will include the same M1X processor. This model will also use the same screen resolution as the earlier version and the other difference is that it will have better GPU performance than the base model. 
• 16-inch MacBook: this will be the high-end version of the MacBook models. The price may start from $1699-$1799 and they will have mini-LED as the stand-alone feature. In addition, this model will have superior M1X processors and GPU performance than rest of the MacBook models.

My MacBook Pro battery had swollen

I was using Apple MacBook Pro for about 4+ years and I really felt comfortable using the laptop, little did I knew that I was about to meet a disaster. My MacBook Pro was working butter smooth all these while and for past few days I was experiencing strange behavior in my MacBook Pro. The machine was quite hot near the trackpad and usually, if I push hard my machine it gets hotter only near the monitor and strangely it was other way around. With broken heart, I put back the lid to laptop and ensured that the screws near swollen battery was loose and since it had heart issues, I kept the lid slightly opened for smooth air flow and with hope that battery issue will be sorted out. The situation worsens to get a new Phone

The new iPhone 12 was launched a few days back, and I was eagerly looking forward to buying the latest version of the mobile phone from Apple. However, all my plans were completely ruined by Apple’s pricing for the latest version, and this time, I was completely disappointed with the pricing. I have been using the iPhone 6 for the past few years and the phone has not worked as it was supposed. Apple itself had acknowledged its blunder of throttling older versions of the phones and including the most unworthy version of the battery. The company itself had announced a replacement program for the battery and even after the replacement of the battery, iPhone 6 was not working as expected. The internal components were not able to withstand new battery power and started to be sluggish and draining more than expected. Completion of two tasks without any escalations

Now I had two tasks on my list of work items to be completed for the day, one task is from the onsite team, who wanted to work on the solution slides even before the client had shared their information and the other task is from my manager with irrelevant details. I had to prioritize the task list so that both tasks are completed on time without any escalations or follow-ups. I knew that my manager's task is irrelevant and would not be of much importance, and the insight he had shared was completely out of context, so I can park this task for a while. The other task from the onsite team required only a few calls to be made to other accounts for similar expertise and it can be completed in 30 mins, so I rushed with this task first and completed in a few mins. Now, I jumped back to the task assigned by my manager and started to compile the information that he had requested, and besides, I had also included a few slides from my expertise and insights from previous client requirements. I had come to my hometown for a long vacation and before my vacation plan, I sought permission to connect from home for 2 days and was hoping to get no work during these times. I was controlling this astonishment and did not want to share this document early to my manager, as he has the habit of requesting additional information without any proper reasons and would always insist on iterative changes. I waited till the end of the day and noticed my manager was offline, I sent the documents that he had requested for and immediately set out of office emails for my long vacation. I did not even bother to check the response from my manager on the request and switched off my laptop. After so much of discussions between the delivery person and myself at the end of a tiring day, we took the bold decision of sending work in progress document to the on-site team for review. Anyhow, with no other options left, I logged off for the day and went back home. I was even more worried about the outcome because if the on-site team share their suggestions by today I would get enough time for making those changes or I would have hardly left with few hours to complete it, as I have a planned vacation coming up. I was even more confused about my next step, whether I should wait for one more day or drop a note to the on-site team, stating that I would be on vacation from the upcoming weekend and the earliest feedback would help us in addressing it sooner than later. I went home with so much of oscillation running back off my mind and the moment I entered my home, I got the splendid idea to close this service request. One more day with my colleague’s work

After getting the document reviewed with my manager and insights he shared with me, I was hoping that document would be taken ownership by my colleagues and I can focus my bandwidth for the new opportunity assigned to me. However, the next day I got a call from my colleague that the document was reviewed by the on-site team and there are a lot more updates to be made and we need your support for one more day. So, I went ahead to my manager and was discussing about iterative changes, I already compiled most part of the document and from now on the new updates can be taken over by my colleagues and I needed to put my effort on new opportunity assigned, as it’s getting escalated to new levels by each passing day. To further increase my temper, my manager was persuading me to support my colleagues for one more day and he would speak with the new opportunity owner or drop a note to the on-site team about my bandwidth. My manager conveyed to me that he would drop a note to the entire team that my bandwidth is completely occupied and my support would not be available till the start of next week. Unnecessary work on weekend

Message was conveyed clear to the delivery person, that I can support partially over weekend with no options available for me from my manager. To my surprise, I had personal work at home and couldn’t spend much time on the deck to be shared and with no option left, I have shared the slides whatever I could work with my available time. However, the delivery person has called upon my manager and has conveyed that additional updates to be made and some relevant information to be in place for leadership review. Now, my manager was checking on with me, when I can spend enough time on the slides and share revised version for review. I was completely furious, as I have conveyed earlier that I am partially available on weekend and additional information required from onsite to avoid redundant effort. But, this stupid delivery person and my manager was persisting me to work on some irrelevant slides, only to showcase to others that they have put in some effort for completion. After all this drama on this opportunity without even starting to take off, I was completely irritated and wanted to back out from this opportunity and was citing about my upcoming vacation this week. Review with Offshore POC and smooth process

After having a quick connect with the offshore delivery POC that we would connect latter in the post lunch session to discuss about the updates and to put information that might be needed in the slides for today’s evening call, I was simultaneously searching in multiple places to get the relevant information in the slides and putting in the required slides in place for review. By post lunch, I have scheduled a call with the delivery POC to get his inputs. During the call we were discussing about each and every slide and modifying the information based upon the inputs shared by the onsite team. However, the delivery POC was requesting me to schedule offshore connect with the delivery lead to get his input as well, because we can’t bypass him and send slides to onsite team without his knowledge. So again, I scheduled a quick call with offshore delivery lead to get his input and to modified based upon his recommendation. This call was going in smooth manner and was hoping that it would also be the same with the offshore delivery lead, but it turned out to be exactly opposite. Working with irritating POC on one more opportunity

One more opportunity assigned to me with one of more irritating delivery POC and this opportunity scheduled to close by more than 2 weeks. For these 2 weeks, I had to work with this irritating delivery person, who is too nagging and would do no work with expectation of everything to be done by offshore team. I had raised too many issues against working with this delivery person and at sometimes even would cut off his suggestions straight away. However now I have no other option but to work with this irritating delivery person on this opportunity and in addition I got update from the offshore leader that no support would be available from offshore delivery team for this opportunity. Finally got irritating opportunity to work

After having no work at office for past one week after long vacation had set my mood to work hard for any new opportunity that is assigned to me. With so much anticipation and with Monday blues, I entered office and to my pleasant surprise, again I had no work and was just killing time by watching videos as my manager was back in office, seated exactly beside me. The day was about end and I was planning to get started to home and suddenly my manager pings in the office communicator. I was shell shocked and was in different mood till I opened the message and it was like, just look for similar opportunity in the repository and share it with the delivery person for further action. I searched in the repository for the relevant document and shared it with the delivery person. Two opportunities at same time

Coming back to work, after working on weekends for completion of the opportunity and getting appreciation mails from the delivery expert, I was relaxing for few days and enjoying my leisure time at office. Now my manager had looped into new opportunity which had very little scope of just sharing estimates to the accounts team and for this opportunity my support was not even required and all the delivery team need to provide was the estimates for the solution. I was happy about getting this opportunity and I was enjoying time at office for 2 days, as I was killing time by getting assigned to this opportunity. Finally on Friday, I logged into office hoping to kill time again and enjoy the entire day with the same opportunity. Till afternoon I have not received any new mails or details on new opportunity, however post afternoon my manager had looped in to one more opportunity that had work to be done. Finally Submitted the opportunity with hard work

After believing the words of the delivery expert, that she would revert back with there updates and solution to me within next one hour or before end of the day as she was busy with some critical delivery work. I was waiting in office to get the updates from the delivery expert, but all went in vain and I didn’t even get an email about the delay or the draft solution inputs required for customizing the solution. I left for the day, went back home with so much of frustration and hoping to get updates at least on the next day. To my surprise, she didn’t even respond on the next day and I don’t want to extend it further. I called her up and asked her few minutes, even if she was busy with her delivery commitments and requested her to review the solution framed by me. Finally after so much of struggle she reviewed the deck and suggested few changes and I felt better because the solution I had drafted has covered all the solution elements requested by client. My experience in Chennai Rains

I would like to recall the 2015 incident of Chennai Rains, where I got in my apartments for 3 days and had no other option to stay put. So, to start off, on day 1 there was heavy rain and it was a working day, I informed the team lead that I would be working from home on that day and was doubtful about the availability due to heavy rains. So, the electricity was available till 11 AM and it was pouring like hell, the electricity disconnection was there on cards anytime soon. I had pretty much no work on that day, I switch on my office laptop and opened my MacBook Pro as well to browse YouTube videos as there were two strings attached one was, since it was raining heavily the dish didn’t and other thing was, my office laptop had so much restrictions and viewing videos in it was a horrendous task.
